How To Prepare To Adopt A Rescue Dog

We are super passionate about animal rescue here at KZ Cozy, and love to help rescues nationwide. If you are thinking about rescuing a dog, I put together a simple list to get your wheels turning, assess your current life and can you open your home to one of these animals.

I hope this simple list guides you in making a decision whether adopting a shelter pet is for you.

Even if it isn't in the cards at this very moment, I encourage you to look for ways you can help your local shelter. Donate old towels, blankets, dog food & treats. Even the most simple act of kindness can help these animals & gives hope towards them finding them a forever home & the love they deserve.

1. **Research and Assess:**
Begin by researching different rescue organizations and assessing your lifestyle to identify the type, size, and energy level of the dog that would be the best fit for you.

2. **Visit Shelters and Rescues:**
Visit local animal shelters and rescue organizations to meet potential canine companions. Take your time interacting with different dogs to find one with the right temperament.

3. **Ask Questions:**
Inquire about the dog's history, behavior, health, and any specific needs. Understanding these factors will help ensure a smooth transition for both you and the dog.

4. **Complete Adoption Application:**
Fill out the adoption application provided by the rescue organization. Be prepared to provide information about your living situation, experience with pets, and how you plan to care for the dog.

5. **Home Visit:**
Many rescues conduct home visits to ensure your living environment is suitable for a pet. Prepare your home by securing any potential hazards and creating a comfortable space for the new dog.

6. **Meet Basic Requirements:**
Ensure you meet all the basic requirements set by the rescue, including age restrictions, living arrangements, and financial capabilities.

7. **Meet-and-Greet:**
Arrange a meet-and-greet with the dog you're interested in adopting. Observe how the dog responds to you, your family members, and the environment.

8. **Trial Period:**
Some rescues offer a trial adoption period to ensure compatibility. Take advantage of this time to assess how well the dog adjusts to your home and vice versa.

9. **Complete Adoption Paperwork:**
Once you've decided to adopt, complete all necessary adoption paperwork. This typically includes agreements regarding care, vaccinations, and spaying/neutering.

10. **Welcome Your New Companion:**
Celebrate the arrival of your new furry friend! Give them time to acclimate to their new surroundings and establish routines that promote bonding and trust. Remember, patience and love go a long way in helping a rescue dog feel at home.

With every purchase made at KZ Cozy (www.kzcozy.com), we donate an Adopt Me dog bandana like the one pictured here, to the animal rescue of your choice.
